- Six Month Update - Part 2
School
The ladies are doing
well in school. Wendie is diligent and conscientious and maintains an excellent grade point average. We are proud of her!
Lyn also works hard
and studies diligently. Here is an example. Lyn has always hated
math, but she is required to take a statistics class, and she was
dreading it. But since she studies and applies herself, she not only
has the highest average in the class, but she also has a reputation
so that the other students often come to her for help! I am so proud
of her!
But….
Here’s the
problem. Not only do Lyn’s classmates often not take their studies
seriously, but often the professors and the school don’t seem to
take it as seriously as they should. This is not the case in every
school, but it seems to be the case in the school Lyn has been enrolled.
Lyn is majoring in
Radiologic Technology. She has one class in her major. More than half
the regularly scheduled classes in that subject have been canceled
for one reason or another.
On the first day of
class the professor said in effect, “Don’t think that when you
graduate with your degree you’ll be able to go where you want and
get a job in any of the six fields in the course description. You’ll
be lucky to find a job doing X-rays here in town. We don’t have the
ability or facilities to train you in everything.” As you can
imagine, that doesn’t inspire confidence in the class, the
professor, or the school.
The same professor,
instead of explaining and teaching the course material, assigns
various students or groups of students to research topics on their
own and then come in to class and teach what they have learned to the
other students. He has another job so I guess he doesn’t have time
himself to adequately prepare to teach.
Lyn says that of all
her professors and instructors, only one can adequately and effectively explain the subject matter.
Another severe
problem in this school is widespread cheating that seems to be an
accepted part of the culture there. The accepted reasoning is, “If it’s
not a class in my major, it’s ok to cheat.”
Moving
Moving
For these reasons we are not staying in Dumaguete long term. We’re
already moving to another province, Bohol, to the provincial capital,
Tagbilaran. Bohol is another island, about two hours away by OceanJet. They have some good schools there. Wendie will
be transferring to the University of Bohol in Tagbilaran.
Wendie will major in Physical Therapy.
